Gospel music. What does that conjure up for you? Churchgoer or not, you just have to enjoy gospel, which refers to good news. We all like good news. What’s not to love about bouncy rhythms, words that make you feel good all over and inspire hope?
That’s why local singer and music teacher Tamara Lea decided that she just had to share the joyful sounds again…hence the return of the Southern Gospel Experience with workshops and concerts that will help you feel the spirit and remind you how good life can be. “I love the feeling you get when you sing gospel”, Lea said…its history is rooted in triumph and victory and I wanted to share how this music celebrates life.” She adds, “while gospel comes from Christian roots, these workshops and concerts are about the music, its history and meaning, and how to sing it, rather than proselytizing.” Kim Pacheco and Richard White Jr., the two presenters from North and South Carolina respectively, have grown up with the tradition of gospel music from the earliest years of their lives. It is this very authenticity that makes this workshop what it is. In true gospel tradition, there is no written music, says Lea, you just come as you are. All voices are welcome. There is no need for previous singing experience, as all music is taught without sheet music regardless of musical experience. Through repetition, Kim, singer and teacher, with her 4-octave range, teaches every part from soprano to bass. She says the lyrics “speak to teachings from all faiths, from Islam to Buddhism”. Lyrics like “trouble don’t last always”, speak to themes found across religions and spiritual teachings and offer positive and hopeful feelings. Richard White Jr., on piano, is the perfect musical collaborator. His passion, knowledge, fluidity and strong classical background bring the sounds together in a way that fills the room, and makes it easy for participants to come on board. Sylvia Wende, a local participant returning for her second workshop with Kim and Richard, looks forward to learning more. She says she welcomes new songs and deepening her expression of what gospel means, and its significance, both past and present, to her understanding of the origins and roots of this music that influenced the social context of generations. The Southern Gospel Experience Workshop is being held at Woodlands High School Band Room 1270 Strathmore Street, Nanaimo, on February 9-12th. Cost of the workshop is $199.99 (earlybird registration) for adults,$99 for school aged students. After February 1st, registration for adults is $225. Registration closes February 1st. Kim calls it, "an experience" because she believes it is beyond transforming; In Kim's words, "what do you want to accomplish, and what do you want to experience?"What you will accomplish is external, what you experience is internal. It is up to you to stay open to the space that you find yourself in, and trust me that I know what the end result is supposed to look and sound like, so I will do all that I can to get you there".
Kim's style of teaching, via rote memorization combined with constant repetition, and her 4 octave range allows her to teach every part from Soprano to Bass, giving each section the full value of color, tone, and intensity that she expects from each note. She allows the workshop attendees time to inhale the song, as well as the experience. In addition, her humor and nurturing posture keeps us engaged and present throughout our time together. Accompanying Kim for the week is Richard White Jr.- Richard is a quiet steel, building songs with his synthesis of classical training, jazz enthusiasm, and gospel upbringing. He is an accomplished professional, highly sought after not only for his knowledge, but also for the passion that he adds to the experience. The energy with which Richard approaches musicality is palpable. He is "bright" on the piano; as is evidenced by the way he flows through each song with precision and grace. Richard and Kim don't seem to "perform" during these workshop experiences. It is apparent that they draw from a wellspring of intimate encounters, both practical and spiritual, and they infuse these encounters into the workshop. They choose songs that not only feature complex rhythms, but difficult chord arrangements as well; challenging the participants to redefine gospel music through the new relationship they have with both themselves, as well as each other.
